Norway’s Petter Solberg and his team joined forces with Volkswagen Sweden for 2017, to form PSRX Volkswagen Sweden and signed Sweden’s Johan Kristoffersson to drive a pair of Volkswagen Polo GTI Supercars. The team showed its pace from the very first round and went on to secure both the World RX Drivers’ and Teams’ Championships.
Here’s how Kristoffersson and Solberg fared head-to-head:
Qualifying Race Wins:
JK 26 – 20 PS
Kristoffersson was often the most consistent driver in 2017 and only once did he not win on track, in Germany, the event after he won his first World RX Drivers’ title. He won all four of his qualifying races in Portugal and Belgium. Solberg also won at least once at every event in qualifying, apart from in the final round in South Africa. He won three Q races in the UK.
Quickest Qualifying Times:
JK 16 – 11 PS
Kristoffersson set at least one quickest qualifying time at nine of the twelve World RX rounds in 2017, but was most dominant in Belgium where he was quickest three times. He didn’t set one quickest time at Lydden, where team mate Petter Solberg was quickest three times. Solberg also set at least one quickest time at eight of the twelve rounds.
JK 12 – 12 PS
Both PSRX Volkswagen Sweden drivers qualified for the semi-finals at every single event. Solberg won his semi-finals in Portugal, Belgium, UK, Canada and Germany as Kristoffersson impressively won his semi-final nine times, only not winning his semi-final race in Portugal, Belgium and Germany.
JK 11 – 9 PS
Kristoffersson only missed out on the final at round 11 in Germany, and won seven finals. He was on the podium 10 times, only not finishing in the top three in Barcelona and Germany. Solberg only missed the final in Norway, Sweden and Latvia, and claimed one win. He scored three podiums, including winning in the UK, finishing third in Belgium and second in Canada.
JK 316 – 252 PS
Kristoffersson put the World RX Drivers’ title out of team mate Solberg’s reach at Latvia RX in Riga. Solberg was second to Kristoffersson through the middle of the season and towards the end, but was just beaten in the points by Sweden’s Mattias Ekstrom at the final round for second.
JK 1st – 3rd PS
Kristoffersson won his first World Championship in his third full season of World RX, climbing to the top step after being third in 2015 and second in 2016. Two-time World RX Champion Solberg improved on his 2016 position to third, but just lost second at the final 2017 round.
