All eyes will be focused on the championship battles this weekend at the penultimate round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship in Germany, as Sweden’s Mattias Ekstrom and his EKS team fight for both the Drivers’ and Teams’ Championship titles.

Also racing at the Estering this weekend are the final rounds of the FIA European Rallycross Championship for TouringCar and Super1600, where a new champion is guaranteed to be crowned in both categories.

In Super1600, Denmark’s Ulrik Linnemann and Hungary’s Krisztian Szabo will fight for the front-wheel drive honours. Following his victory at the penultimate round in Barcelona, Linnemann holds a six point advantage over Szabo, and won the event at the Estering in Germany last year. However, Linnemann has suffered from engine failures in testing in the last week, ahead of what is set to be a nail-biting climax to the series this season.

In TouringCar, with a maximum of 30 points still available from the final round in Germany, four drivers have a chance of lifting the crown. Norway’s Ben-Philip Gundersen is in the driving seat, leading the standings seven points ahead of Sweden’s Magda Andersson. The former Junior racer scored a podium finish at the Estering last season, and if she wins title this weekend will be the first female FIA Rallycross Champion. Winner of the penultimate round in Latvia, Fredrik Magnussen is a third, three points behind Andersson and ten off the lead, while Norway’s Per-Magne Royras has an outside chance of claiming the title in his first season racing a Mazda RX8. 28 points off the lead, Royras will rely on a poor event for his rivals if he is to lift the crown.
