Latvia’s Janis Baumanis has qualified for the semi-finals for the first time in 2016, at the second round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship at Hockenheim in Germany.

The World RX Team Austria driver was fourth fastest in Q3 and eighth fastest in Q4 to secure an impressive fourth overall at the Intermediate Classification and will start on the front row of semi-final two.

“For sure we are very happy. It’s a really good result already for the team. We were not able to show the speed we have in Portugal but here we are at the top so it’s brilliant what the team have done. The feeling is really good already,” said Baumanis, who raced head-to-head with Mattias Ekstrom and Sebastien Loeb in his Q4 race.

“Always in the last race it is the fastest guys and it’s brilliant that I was able to fight with Ekstrom and also with Sebatsien Loeb. We had small contact in Q4, I was hoping that Loeb would not spin and he didn’t so I’m glad that he was able to save it. The best drivers in the world are in the last race so I’m really happy I can be on the front row of the semi-final.”

Baumanis is hoping for a clean run through the semi-finals as he targets a position in the final. “Hopefully we can have a clean first corner and race, so I can hopefully make it into the final, that would be brilliant.”
